Eliciting

v Ask questions

v Give instructions that require verbal interaction

v Use real objects

v Give visual aids (drawings, flashcards, videos)

v Fill in gaps in tables, scales or diagrams

 

Scrambled sequences

 

  • They were watching a mangetting out of a black Mercedes
  • It was a bitterly cold day in Chicago
  • The two detectives looked at each other
  • Detectives Ryan and Schwarz were outside the  Lake Hotel
  • Was the murder weapon in the bag?
  • The man was carrying an overnight bag that seemed unusually big
  • Schwarz said “could this be the guy we have been looking for?”

 

Information gap activities

 

  • Repetition actitivies
  • Back-chaining :repeat the sentence in chunks, starting at the end:

“Black Mercedes”, then

“getting out of a black Mercedes” then

“the man was getting out of a black Mercedes”

  • Echo questions eg. She went home 2 days ago

 2 days ago?

  Yes 2 days ago!

  • Questions and answers
  • Simple substitution teacher: do you have a car?

 Student: do you have a car?

 Teacher: a computer…..

  Student: do you have a computer?

  • Cue questions teacher: your hair is getting very long….. (cue = cut)

 Student: I need a haircut / I must get it cut

 

Stages in listening activities:

These are the logical stages when doing a listening exercise with students

  • Play listening extract for the first time
  • Warm up / set the scene
  • Play a 2nd time and eg. Fill in blanks / put text in order
  • Teach key vocabulary
  • Pair up students and ask them to compare answers
  • Give follow-up instructions
  • Students report back to whole class
